Cudham Church of England Primary School

Writing

At Cudham, we believe that communication is a key life skill that is crucial to learn from a young age. That is why, at Cudham, our unique subject specialist teaching enables our children to engage thoroughly, through a progressive curriculum, enriched with the key literacy skills needed to thoroughly encapsulate life in full. Within our stunning setting steeped in history, pupils are provided with a richly creative curriculum allowing them to engage, inspire and develop throughout their time here. Through spoken and written language, we provide them with the skills to become independent, fully equipped learners.

Across our school, we believe the delivery of a coherent, exciting and diverse curriculum enables the children to flourish. Through the writing curriculum – which is delivered by literacy specialists in both key stages – there is a clear progressive path allowing the children to learn, retain, embed and apply the skills needed to write coherently. Through specialist teaching, we have been able to create and deliver a creative curriculum which uses a range of diverse skills and schemes, including The Literacy Shed and Jane Considine’s The Write Stuff, to engage, inspire and allow pupils to develop an appreciation of quality literature. From Early Years, the children will learn the basics of pencil grip and how to sit correctly, whilst learning the formation of the letter families through our handwriting schemes Letterjoin and Bubble Writing.  Punctuation and Grammar are taught as part of our daily writing lessons ensuring the children can identify and apply it within their writing. Spellings are taught explicitly, following Jane Considine’s The Write Stuff’s spelling scheme which focuses on having a concrete phonetical awareness and the ability to identify patterns within many different word families.
